Being the capital of the state of Yucatan and the largest city of the Peninsula, Mérida is localized in the northwest part of the state, about 22 miles of the Gulf of Mexico's coast. It has a fascinating colonial background, and you can admire the archeological sites which tell you pre-Hispanic stories. Merida is without a doubt the main door to the Mayan culture.
One of the most entertaining traditions there is in the city of Merida is el Parque de Centenario, the perfect place for kids and adults to be in touch with beautiful animal species like birds and insects. You can do other activities such as: roller skate, horseback riding, rollercoaster for the young ones, or go on a raft to calmly go on a ride on an artificial lagoon. But you just can't leave without taking a ride on a little, roof-less train with several wagons that goes all around the park.
One remarkable and characteristic scenery of the Yucatan panorama is the colorful little town of Izamal, because it shows, arches, facades and a very distinctive yellow color. It is located very close to Merida. You can find there the former monastery of San Antonio de Padua. The beautiful constructions of this calmed town are quite peculiar, they are distinguishable from the rest of the colonial towns of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Merida’s food is heavily influenced on both actual and ancient Mayan Culture, giving a result of amazing flavors, smells and colors, the basic ingredient of Yucatan gastronomy is chile habanero. Some of the typical food you can find here are: Salbutes; which is a deep fried puffed tortilla topped with pulled turkey or chicken, avocado, red onion and pickled jalapeño pepper.
